Aran Pitter & Haydn Cottam
Visions of Nature
4th-30th April
Upper Gallery
A large exhibition of recent work by artist Aran Pitter, featuring selected works by Haydn Cottam.
Aran, who studied Fine Art at Epson School of Art and Design, normally uses watercolour on paper and is particularly fond of working outside in the Welsh landscape. More recently however he started working in acrylic on paper, often mixed with watercolour and bicarbonate of soda to give texture. This exhibition will incorporate much of this new style of work. Haydn Cottam’s Welsh landscapes will also be on show, including images of the river Taff.

Jewellery exhibition
April 2008
Lower gallery
A new collection of paper jewellery by innovative artist Vanessa Swindell.
With a fascination for texture, pattern and form, she draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from mechanical engines to sea forms. The jewellery is formed from Japanese tissue paper strengthened with layers of glue and card; intricately folded, each piece is different and unique.
The artist studied textile design and also continues to paint.

"Marginalia Part 1: How the Words
Came into Being"
20th April-20th May
Round Room
Marginalia, the first major solo project by Richard Bowers, represents a culmination of many years working within sonic art and music fields and draws upon his experience as a painter/printmaker.
The installation at the Washington Gallery presents readings through the 'Inferno' of mediaeval Italian poet, Dante. Large-scale images create a backcloth for a drama of sound: an exploration of the transitions between intelligible vocal utterance and noise. Speech is decimated and regurgitated as a composition taking on 'mobile form' within the spaces. The works are a commentary on the text: marginal notes; underlinings; crossings out; pages torn out and defaced.
Richard Bowers has an impressive record, both as a creative artist and expert curator. His approach is experimental and rooted in sound knowledge of his subject.
Marginalia is made possible with the financial support of the Arts Council of Wales

Jason & Julienne Braham
Pictures and Pitchers
2nd-28th April
Lower Gallery
Husband and wife Jason and Julienne Braham exhibit a combined selection of traditional clay pottery and figurative paintings.
Julienne describes her paintings as essentially celebratory, an expression of empathy with the subject, a distillation of visual impression and inner feeling. She feels each piece of work as an adventure, without rules or formulas in the making process, so the resulting image can be totally different from the conception.
Jason’s passion for pottery goes back to 1972, following his appointment to teach pottery alongside sculpture at Wellington College, Berkshire. During the ten years he was at Wellington, he developed an enthusiasm for “live-flame” firings and built three wood and oil fired kilns there.
He was appointed Director of Art at Harrow School in 1983. At the same time he established a pottery in Herefordshire where he developed a range of salt-glazed domestic ware, taking inspiration from European country pottery as well as from the potters of the Leach tradition.
