Ken Hayes - At The Hunt

I studied Art at Wakefield College, Yorkshire & Film Animation at the Newport Film School, South Wales where I gained my diploma. For 17 years I’ve worked as a freelance cartoon animator for film & television working on many successful & award winning series for BBC, ITV & S4C.

I like to think of myself as an entertainer in both mediums, ‘movement’ being the common bond. My main aim in painting is to present to the viewer an exciting stimulus of vibrant colour & texture. I prefer gouache over watercolour simply because of it’s strength, I may also employ oil pastel, ink, chalks & often try out other devices such as masking fluid, salt & suchlike. Whatever I use I apply it intuitively & instinctively, trying to mentally ‘feel’ the qualities that a subject offers, if I see a colour, a texture, a shape, a contrast of light & dark however vague, I exaggerate it to the full for maximum impact.
