The Washington Gallery Art Club runs every Thursday evening, 4pm – 5pm. The children will experience a range of activities and mediums, and create their own artist’s portfolio throughout the course.

The price £5 per session, You are welcome to make a block booking for the ten week term. To register your child or for further information, call us on 02920 712100, or email us. (Please note there will be no Art Club over half term)

Penarth View Art Contest | Johnny Robinson’s Pavilion Wins

Congratulations to Johnny Robinson of Fairfield Primary School for his winning entry in the Penarth View Art competition, ‘Summer in Penarth.’

Johnny will have his painting of the pier pavilion published on the cover of the next Penarth View and Johnny’s original painting will be displayed in the Washington Gallery. Johnny will also have his portrait painted by local artist Sheridan Ward. A further congratulations to all participants. Over 550 pieces were submitted from children from local schools, and all can be viewed at Penarth View art competition gallery http://community.penarthview.co.uk/archives/366/

Outreach Education Programme Exhibition | 30th June – 8th July

An exhibition showcasing the work of talented students from St Cyres school throughout their art faculty – Art, Design, Design Technology and Photography

To mark the end of our current Education Outreach Programme, The Washington Gallery invites you to view the work of volunteers and artists who, with funding from Children in Need, have worked with local charities to help the vulnerable in the community express themselves through art. The exhibition also features work by students from St Cyres School art, photography and design & technology departments. Open until July 5th

Nursery Kids Show Their Drawing Skills

From the end of March and for two weeks work by children from Tredegarville Church of Wales Primary School, Cardiff will be displayed in the Washington Gallery.

More than twenty five views of the Penarth Pavilion will hang in the foyer gallery, demonstrating the enthusiasm the young students had to picture the view of the colourful Art Deco building and Victorian pier.

School nursery teacher & art co-ordinator, Clare Sommerville, said “We thought they would be good enough to be in a gallery. And now they are!”

Richard Gwyn grew up in Crickhowell, Breconshire. He studied anthropology at the LSE, and then spent many years in reckless travel. He returned to Wales in the 1990s to take a PhD at Cardiff University, where he currently directs the Creative Writing MA programme. He is the author of two novels, The Colour of a Dog Running Away and Deep Hanging Out, and six collections of poetry, the most recent being Sad Giraffe Café (Arc, 2010).

In addition he has written many articles and essays and reviews new fiction for The Independent. He has translated poetry and fiction from Spanish and Catalan, and his own writings have appeared in many languages.

The Marina Ballroom Project

The Marina Ballroom Project is a project that is being run in conjunction with Heritage Lottery Fund. The project engages young volunteers between the ages of 15 – 25 in a variety of workshops held across a range of disciplines – namely:

1940’s History Places Availible, Enquire Now
Textiles & Fashion – Fully booked
Hair & make-up - Places Availible, Enquire Now
Music – Places Availible, Enquire Now
Dance - Places Availible, Enquire Now
Graphic Design & Illustration – Fully booked

The aim of this project is to engage young people in the community, provide them with the opportunity to learn more about the past and provide them with the opportunity to learn new skills.

Life Drawing Workshops 2010

Tutor: Pauline Williams

Tuesday 28th June: 6.30 – 8.30pm

Price: £11 per session

(£10 per session for Washington Friends)

The workshops are suitable for both the beginner and more advanced artists, as tuition will be based on individual guidance. The workshops are beneficial to students studying ‘AS’ and ‘A2’Art. We will be working from a range of life-models, working on a mixture of short and long poses to suit student’s needs.

Students need to bring their own personal art kit.

A1 Paper will be on sale (50p a sheet)

Drawing boards are available for students to use.

An easel is available if students prefer to work standing up.
