Photography Competition Exhibition

Following the very successful photographic competition and subsequent exhibition, we are pleased to announce that the complete collection is remaining on display at the Washington Gallery and is currently being scheduled for tours in and around South Wales. The winning entry, decided by public vote, was the remarkable photograph shown here, taken by local photographer Mark Rosoman, of a lightning bolt striking the end of the pier.

Mark Rosoman winning entry

The standard of all the entries was very high, and all of the entries are now on sale at the gallery as framed prints for £45, with all proceeds going to the Pavilion Project.

The wave of public interest for the exhibition reflects the passion that the local community have for the restoration of this iconic building, and the support for PACL’s ongoing Heritage Lottery bid.

The tour of the exhibition will be finalised soon, and details will be published on the web site and in local media; we have also planned to publish all 86 entries on a book.

PACL thanks everyone involved in making this competition and exhibition a success.

A competition held last summer has seen Barry Comprehensive School come up with two winning designs for a logo to suit the refurbished Penarth Pavilion. Caelum Davies (13) and Connor Boyle (13) are both students of the school which produced a number of impressions for the new design.

The logos were chosen from entries from Vale Schools and are being displayed in the Washington Gallery alongside information on the Pavilion Proje This week the boys were invited to the Washington Gallery where they met Malcolm Hird, coordinator for the competition, and the Project Director.

Malcolm Hird said, “I feel that these entries help show some of the wonderful talent there is among young people in the Vale of Glamorgan. Some people might say these entries are more effective than the logo for the London Olympics which cost £400,000!”

Reminiscence Day for the Pavilion

A well-known campaigner for the Penarth Pavilion refurbishment will help host a special `Reminiscence Day’ next month. The day has been organised by Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd (PACL) at the Washington Gallery so that local people can record special memories.

June Elias, a popular Penarth figure who has worked tirelessly for some years to revive the Pavilion has volunteered her time to the PACL Project. Anyone who has an anecdote about the Pavilion – the events, dances or personal memory – is invited to come along for an Open House Day on Thursday September 13th from 11am –4pm.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand offering complimentary teas and cake throughout. The Pavilion project officer has also arranged to have recording equipment and computer support to help take down all the local stories. These anecdotes will form part of the Social History of the Pavilion and the document will be published as part of the project along with material that has already been collected from archive sources. Members of the public are invited to call in on the day.

Penarth Arts and Crafts Limited (PACL), a local community group, has secured a planning grant from Heritage Lottery for an exciting redevelopment of the Penarth Pier Pavilion.

The Pavilion building is an iconic landmark on the sea front, built in the 1929 as a fun palace and a great focus for the whole community.

Heritage Lottery have awarded a planning grant of  £50,000 to prepare comprehensive financial and building studies to restore the Pavilion to its former glory. The Vale of Glamorgan Council is providing £5000 of match funding under the Active Citizenship Scheme towards the Project Planning grant.

At present it is a shadow of its former self and the barrel vaulted cement interior has been little used in recent years. The building requires substantial investment to properly restore it for the long term ,though the Vale Council recently completed over £80,000 of painting and concrete repair work to the building. In the 1990’s the Vale of Glamorgan Council with HLF funding carried out £1million repairs to the pier itself. It has also recently carried out external works to the superstructure.

Council Leader Cllr Margaret Alexander  said  it was excellent news that a Penarth based community group, which receives support from the Council had been successful in securing the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“We look forward to working in partnership to restore the Pier Pavilion and bring it back to beneficial use”

The PACL application included proposals to links to the front, ensuring the esplanade was well serviced by public transport and offered disabled access. Development of an improved water transport infrastructure was also raised in the application.

Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd was formed in 1998 and based in Penarth’s Washington Gallery which shows Welsh contemporary art and craft with year round exhibitions. It has a busy outreach art education programme, with up to twelve extended projects annually for disadvantaged groups.
As a charity it is governed by a Board of Trustees, with funding from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Penarth Town Council and the Arts Council of Wales, among others. It was a recent recipient of a Civic Design Award for its development and usage of the former art deco cinema.

Chairman of Penarth Arts and Crafts Limited, Mr Gary Biggin, said the group was now planning to mount a publicity campaign to inform local residents and seek the views of the whole community. Should the project development be successful it is hoped the Pier will house regular events to include performance, conferences, film, a crèche, environmental art exhibitions and business sponsored trade fairs.

Plans are also being initiated for a dramatic sea-view restaurant.
