News:

Oriel Washington Gallery,
which is run by the registered charity Penarth Arts and Crafts Limited has completed its 2006 programme of pinhole photography workshops throughout South Wales. The workshops, which were funded by the Heritage Lottery ‘Young Roots’ Fund, were a resounding success and produced some spectacular images.

Students from Bishop Headley Roman Catholic High School in Merthyr Tydfil and Maesgwynn Special School in Rhondda Cynon Taff created their own cameras from little more than a shoebox to record their images of local history.

Since then the photographs have been exhibited throughout South Wales. First they were displayed amongst other artists at the Washington Gallery in Penarth, South Wales. Following this the photographs travelled to Merthyr Tydfil where they provided the backdrop to the opening of the new Welsh Assembly building. The launch was attended by AMs and First Minister Rhodri Morgan took the time to chat to these young photographers about their new-learned art.

The images have received widespread praise in the local media. The Big Issue published a double page spread on the project and articles were also featured in the Merthyr Express, the South Wales Echo, the Western Mail, the Penarth Times and Metro newspaper.

If you’d like to see these photos in their full glory why not go to Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil where they will be exhibited in the beginning of April 2007.
